Commissions announced
for the
2007
Peter Darrell
Choreographic Award |
The Trust is delighted to announce the recipients of the 2007 Peter Darrell Choreographic Award. The Award provides a unique opportunity for emerging choreographers to work with Scotland’s leading dance companies – Scottish Ballet and Scottish Dance Theatre (SDT) – commissioning them to create, produce and present a new work.
The Scottish Dance Theatre commission has been awarded to Vanessa Haska and the Scottish Ballet commission has been awarded to Diana Loosmore. Both choreographers will have the chance to develop their creative skills within the context of a dynamic full-time professional dance company, with additional support available from a mentor and the company’s own directors - SDT’s Janet Smith and Scottish Ballet’s Ashley Page - two of the most highly-regarded and well-established artistic directors in British dance today.
Janet Smith, SDT’s Artistic Director said:
“We are delighted to be involved with the Peter Darrell Choreographic Award for the third time. The two previous occasions gave us the chance to discover and creatively engage with emerging choreographers whilst celebrating the spirit and legacy of Peter Darrell. This year the Award will bring us Vanessa Haska whose work is beginning to emerge on the professional and international level. It is gestural, characterful, intelligent and witty. She is an individual and authentic dance maker of work with a robust full flavour and we are all looking forward to this new collaboration.”
Vanessa Haska commented:
“Having the opportunity to work for a company with history such as Scottish Dance Theatre, to work with excellent dancers, to challenge them and challenge you is something that every choreographer seeks and I, receiving the Peter Darrell Choreographic Award, feel lucky that I will have the chance to experience that.”
Ashley Page, Scottish Ballet's Artistic Director said:
"Following a wide range of interesting submissions from choreographers, I was really delighted that the panel chose to present the Peter Darrell Choreographic Award to Diana Loosmore. Not only has Diana recently taken part in Company choreographic workshops, but Sirocco, the piece she presented informally, will be performed as part of our forthcoming Autumn National Tour. I look forward both to working with her on this exciting new project and to watching her develop as a creative force"
Diana Loosmore said:
"I am both excited and honoured to have received this important award, and look forward to this opportunity to develop my choreographic style working with dancers I have such professional respect for."
The new works created by Vanessa and Diana will be premiered at Dundee Rep on 22, 23 and 24 February 2007, during SDT’s Spring Season, with a further performance of both works at the Theatre Royal Glasgow on Friday 13 April as part of Scottish Ballet’s Spring Season. This will be the first time audiences will have the chance to see the two companies sharing a stage to present the Award-winning new works.
The 2007 Peter Darrell Choreographic Award has been made possible by support from Scottish Arts Council National Lottery funding, with significant in-kind support from Scottish Dance Theatre and Scottish Ballet.
Speaking of the Award, Anita Clark, Head of Dance at Scottish Arts Council said:
“Developing new choreographic talent is essential for a vibrant dance sector in Scotland and we heartily congratulate Vanessa and Diana for their achievements in gaining these awards.
The Peter Darrell Award provides an excellent opportunity for choreographers to work with Scotland’s leading companies and I very much look forward to seeing their completed work next spring.”
