The 2000 Award followed a different format from the first
Peter Darrell Choreographic Award, held in conjunction with
Scottish
Ballet, at Glasgow's Mitchell Theatre in Autumn 1998.
In 2000, the on-the-night judging was replaced by a selection panel
- Kim Brandstrup, Gill Clarke, Elaine McDonald OBE and Janet Smith
- who assessed applications on past achievements and future proposals,
and chose two winners, Liz Roche and
Jan De Schynkel. They have created
work with dancers of Scottish
Dance Theatre and, as part of the Award, Kim Brandstrup, Artistic
Director of ARC
Dance Company, has been available to both choreographers in
a mentoring role.
Choreography requires creative and flexible thinking and we hope
this has been reflected in our approach to The
Peter Darrell Choreographic Award. This year's new format stemed
from a feedback session held with the 1998 short-listed choreographers,
the Award mentor, assessors and judging panel.
Without the support of an award from the Scottish
Arts Council National Lottery Fund, as well as grants and donations
from many other organisations and individuals,
the Peter Darrell Choreographic
Award would have remained but a dream, and we are immensely
grateful to everyone who has contributed to its creation and success.
